The practical conclusion is simple. Blade width, angle, and tab direction matter more than force. Use a blade broad enough to support the tab across its width, and never let a tool press directly into the thin shell.

Start with the bracelet face-down and choose a removable link near the middle of the band. After closing each tab, flex the link by hand. The bracelet should expand and contract smoothly, and the joint shouldn't feel gritty, frozen, or loose. Check that the U-clip remains seated while the link pivots. If the clip binds, a tab is usually still engaged or the inner and outer link halves aren't aligned.
Don't keep squeezing for cosmetic perfection. Repeatedly flattening a tab can work-harden the metal and make the fold brittle. Once the tab is secure, the clip is seated, and the link articulates freely, stop pressing.
Plan on twenty to thirty minutes for a first adjustment, with the actual link release taking far less time once the shell is open. A later adjustment can be closer to ten minutes, but rushing the first attempt is how clips vanish and tabs become creased. Give yourself a clear table, strong light, and enough space to keep removed parts separate.
Work over a white towel or inside a clear zip-lock bag. The U-clips are sprung and can fly when they clear the channel, while a loose tab can flick from the screwdriver. Eye protection is sensible, especially if the metal is hard or the screwdriver is held at a steep angle. A shallow tray lined with a towel is also effective because the fabric absorbs the clip's bounce.
Remove one link at a time and try the fit. An expansion bracelet can feel noticeably tighter after a single link is removed, and putting one back is more awkward than taking one out.
